Neighborhood and Community

Toco Hills is a suburban area just outside the city limits of Atlanta in unincorporated DeKalb County (lower property taxes). This community has well-established subdivisions (mostly developed in the 1950s and 1960s) as well as a number of new subdivisions built within the last 10 years. Development in the area has increased in the past five years, as people are attracted by the convenient close-in location with easy access to shopping, area parks, and the interstate (I-85, I-285, and Ga. 400). The Toco Hills area is extremely convenient to Emory University , the CDC, Egleston Children's Hospital, the VA Hospital, the Marcus Center and the American Cancer Society headquarters. Toco is a walking neighborhood; leafy trees, shrubs, grass and sidewalks abound.

Toco Hills Shopping Center is nearby.  The center houses Publix and Kroger, Office Depot, Pike Nursery,  many restaurants, a fitness center, and numerous stores and businesses, including a popular coffee shop.  Other nearby shopping areas include North DeKalb Mall;  BriarVista Center, Whole Foods; Loehmann's Plaza; Lindbergh Plaza and the new Lindbergh City Centre development centered around the MARTA rail station, Northlake Mall, Virginia-Highland, Sage Hill, the Zonolite Road art-business district, Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza.

There are several parks in the area as well.
W.D. Thomson Park is maintained by DeKalb County and features a multi-use field, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, picnic area and trails. Mason Mill Park , also maintained by DeKalb County , is even larger and includes the DeKalb Tennis Center .  Emory University operates Hahn Woods and a fitness center that is open to the public (with membership).

This area is districted for some of
DeKalb County ’s best public schools, including Briarvista Elementary (which has a Montessori program through 2nd grade); Shamrock Middle School ; and Druid Hills High School (a partner with Emory University in the Druid Hills Community Consortium). Other nearby schools include  Kittredge Elementary (a magnet public school for high achievers in grades 4-6),  and private schools including Cliff Valley , Torah Day and the Paideia School
